Publication of this year’s edition of the “Gambero Rosso” Italian wine bible brings a few exciting suprises. Of note are the maximum “Tre Bicchieri” award given to a pair of Cuculo’s wines. We invite you taste them at our “Big Christmas Tasting” on Sunday 8 December. Tickets are £30 and sell out fast. Clink the link for details. Book in-store, via email or over the phone.
We’ll start with a brand new estate, the beautiful Torre a Cona, which is to be found to the South-West of Firenze (Toscana) in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini appellation.
Torre a Cona Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG Riserva 2015
“Black fruit and intensity with notes of camphor, blackberry, cassis, oriental spice, mint, earth. On the palate there’s a lovely black forest gateau note with black cherry and vanilla. Superb length with the acidity holding the 14% ABV in check. Tannins are present and correct. Best served with a good piece of steak.” Michael Palij MW
Superb value – and a Tre Bicchieri winner last year – is Torre a Cona’s younger, unoaked Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2018
This showed especially well at Cuculo’s recent Tuscan wine meal and tasting.
“Classic Sangiovese nose of red currants, tea, tomato, cherries, rhubarb, garrigue, earth, herbal. Great freshness given the warm vintage with beautiful acidity and finely-judged, fully-ripe tannins. Finish is excellent with notes of summer pudding, mint and earth.” Just £14.45.
