Given my new-found love for German wines I present a very brief Riesling lexicon
Trocken – Dry.
Halbtrocken – Half-dry.
Feinherb – Off-dry.
Lieblich – Semi-sweet.
Kabinett – Generally dry and lower in alcohol.
Spätlese – literally ‘late picking’. Medium body and made dry or sweet.
Auslese – literally ‘picked out’ – choice grapes picked from bunches, generally reserved for sweet wines.
Beerenauslese – Sauternes style, affected with botrytis. Selected for dessert wines.
